As per Solid waste Management Rules 2016, “Bulk Waste Generator (BWG)” means any entity having an average waste generation of more than 100 kg per day. This typically includes housing societies, schools, hotels, hospitals, marriage halls etc. BWGs play a significant role in improving the city waste management system due to the overall quantum of waste produced.

Considering this, Baramati Municipal Council (in Maharashtra) is implementing a novel project of developing model BWGs in the city by promoting sustainable waste management practices. The project is being implemented with the support of Social Lab Environmental Solutions Private Limited, a consulting agency. The project duration is 4 months (from March 23 to June 23) and has covered 22 BWGs in the city.

The brief details of the project are provided below.

Activities Implemented

To achieve the project objectives, following activities were taken up sequentially.

  • Preparation of SOPs

To start with, the Standard Operating Processes (SOPs) were prepared separately for each type of BWG as per CPHEEO guidelines and SBM toolkit. They described the sustainable waste management practices to be followed by each type of BWG.

  • Awareness & Training session

Thereafter, awareness and training sessions were conducted for the implementation of SOP, involving the management and administrative staff.

  • Putting posters and stickers

To spread the message of sustainable practices, posters and stickers were placed on the walls.

  • Technical Support in compost and biogas installation and operation

To ensure on-site wet waste processing, technical support was provided in the installation and operation of compost and biogas units. Notably, out of covered BWGs, 2 hotels adopted biogas installations while 5 schools adopted composting pits.

  • Developing market linkages for sale of recyclable plastic

In terms of dry waste, market linkages were established of BWGs with the scrap dealers based on the type of recyclable plastic waste which helped them to generate revenue.

  • Periodical Monitoring

To ensure that BWGs undertake recommended sustainable waste management practices, periodical monitoring is being done at the premises of BWGs.
