Our last blog gave an insight into sustainable packaging and how it will help in reducing the carbon footprint of the companies. This blog will give a glimpse of companies/brands that have introduced sustainable packaging for their products.

People are now becoming more health-conscious and the talk about healthy food is around every corner. But what is the use of such talks if the healthy food is being served in unhygienic cutlery which only adds to the waste But there is a silver lining in this, few brands have taken steps to reduce their carbon footprints.

  1. Treeware- A Mumbai-based company that sells organic deodorants and hand sanitizers ensures that they send their products in eco-friendly packages. Their products are shipped in cardboard boxes and tied with jute rope and packed in newspaper shreds. The cardboard and newspaper they use are pre-used and are collected by donation.
  2. Ecoware- Ecoware is India’s largest company selling eco-friendly cutlery. The cutlery is made from crop waste and is completely biodegradable. They convert crop waste into alternatives for single-use plastic. A certified manufacturer of sustainable packaging in India, Ecoware is providing a large number of brands with their eco-friendly products.
  3. EcoKarma- EcoKarma is an e-commerce website, which sells eco-friendly products. Founded with a cause for protecting Mother Earth, EcoKarma not only sells eco-friendly products but also ensures its packaging is completely sustainable. Ritika, founder of EcoKarma has shared how they are using and reusing eco-friendly options for packaging.

“ We use cardboard boxes which are collected from our neighborhood and knowns. I’m known as the ‘The Garbage girl of Society’ as I keep collecting stuff which I could reuse for my product’s packaging. Apart from the collected cardboard boxes, we also keep a stock of corrugated cardboard boxes in various sizes. We use waste papers, newspaper cuttings as filling in the boxes. For delicate products like glass bottles, we cut cardboard evenly and fold around or use honey paper bubble wrap. While making our packaging visually appealing we opt for biodegradable options like jute twines and jute flowers. And finally, the newspapers used for wrapping are block printed with our logo. We also make ropes with chips and biscuits packets. Basically, we try to reuse as many options available for us and look forward to reducing our carbon footprint wherever possible.”

These were a few local and small-scale brands in India that are paving the way for reducing their carbon footprint. Many big brands have also stepped in to reduce the plastic used in their packaging.

  1. Unilever has confirmed that by 2025 the company will halve its use of virgin plastic by reducing its use of plastic packaging. They are rethinking the plastic packaging with the ‘Less, Better, No’ plastic framework, and under this, they have introduced recyclable ice cream tubs made from paper, and beauty brands like ‘Dove’ use 100% recycled plastic bottles.
  2. Procter & Gamble (P&G) India uses ocean plastic which is collected from littered coasts and recycles them into shampoo and conditioner bottles.
  3. Nykaa, a cosmetics company has started using paper bubble wraps and whatever unavoidable plastic packaging is used, is recycled.
  4. Diageo and Dettol also launched a limited-edition eco-friendly packaging during the pandemic.
  5. H&M, a multinational clothing brand, has packaging that is 100 % circular and renewable.

With all these examples, we see a ray of hope in terms of companies switching to sustainable packaging and circular system for their packaging. As the pandemic was rising, the online shopping trend increased and people started acknowledging the amount of waste generated due to the packaging of the product bought. Millennials are the ones who we see are super conscious about such things and their impact on their carbon footprint and opt for a sustainable lifestyle. They know how to use the digital space rightly for raising awareness and asking out brands to switch to an environmentally friendly option. And Social lab always looks forward to taking initiatives to spread awareness and reach out to companies and suggesting them to redesign or reduce their packaging, check out such posts on our Instagram page.

Stay tuned, as we’d be sharing more such blogs soon!
