Innovation in Home composting in Baramati (through Bio-liquid composter)
Home composting is the most effective way of decentralized wet waste processing. Generally, it is carried out through the aerobic decomposition of wet waste in a drum or pit, or basket. However, its use is limited with the problems being reported by end users such as smell problems, the presence of insects, and regular stirring requirements.
Therefore, to tackle these issues, Baramati Municipal Council has adopted an innovative approach of anaerobic composting using bio-liquid composters, with the support of the consulting agency, Social Lab Environmental Solutions Private Limited. Under this method, the user needs to add a fixed proportion of wet waste and water in a closed container daily while the culture needs to be applied only in the beginning for mixing. Then, a continuous output of liquid compost can be obtained daily after 25 days which should be mixed with water and applied to the plants in the garden.
Project Insights :
The project adopted a holistic approach and focused on awareness & training, installation support and daily monitoring. It aims to cover 500 households in the city and has so far covered 50 households. Notably, 200 litres of liquid compost is already produced and used for the home garden. The project interventions and impact generated are highlighted below.
